Crime: Causes two diseases called salmonellosis enteric fever (typhoid), resulting from bacterial invasion of the bloodstream, and acute gastroenteritis, resulting from a foodborne infection. Most cases are caused by infected food. Salmonella often infects cattle and poultry, though other animals such ascats have also been shown to be sources of infection to humans. Salmonella has also been used as a bioterrorism agent since the 20th century.
Victims: 1.4 million cases annually. 600 deaths in the U.S. every year, accounting for 31 percent of all food-related deaths.
